Artificial Intelligence and Art

This course explores the profound historical and theoretical relationship between automation and artistic expression. Unlike technique-heavy studio courses, this module balances theory with practice, examining the history of computer art, the philosophy of creativity, and the collaborative potential of human-machine systems. Students will engage in critical analysis of AI artworks while producing their own conceptual pieces that challenge the boundaries of authorship.

  1. Trace the history of algorithmic art from early cybernetics to modern Generative AI
  2. Analyze the philosophical questions regarding authorship, originality, and creativity in AI art
  3. Experiment with various AI approaches (Style Transfer, GANs, Diffusion) as artistic mediums
  4. Critique major works and exhibitions in the field of AI and computational art
