Animation & Motion Graphics for Artists
This course views animation as a fine art form (“Moving Painting”). Distinct from commercial character animation, this curriculum encourages experimental storytelling. Students will explore Stop Motion, Rotoscoping (tracing over video), and Motion Graphics (After Effects) to create looped video art, music videos, and projection mapping content that defies narrative logic.
§ 01 By the end you can
- Master the "12 Principles of Animation" applied to abstract forms
- Execute Stop Motion techniques: Claymation, Cut-out, and Pixelation
- Create "Rotoscoped" sequences: Blending live action with hand-drawn lines
- Utilize Adobe After Effects for Motion Graphics: Keyframing and Typography
- Integrate animation into fine art installations (Looping & Projection)
§ 02 Sixteen sessions
The whole semester.
- 01The Persistence of Vision: History of Animation
- 02The 12 Principles: Timing & Spacing
- 03Stop Motion I: Object & Clay Animation
- 04Stop Motion II: Lighting & Dragonframe Software
- 052D Hand Drawn: The Walk Cycle
- 06Rotoscoping: The Digital/Analog Hybrid
- 07GIF Art & The Perfect Loop
- 08 · MidtermMidterm Examination
- 09Motion Graphics I: After Effects Interface
- 10Motion Graphics II: Kinetic Typography
- 11Motion Graphics III: Masking & Compositing
- 12Experimental Narratives: Non-Linear Storytelling
- 13Glitch Art & Datamoshing in Video
- 14Sound Design for Animation
- 15Projection Mapping: Animating on Objects
